What is rosacea / redness?
Rosacea is a long-term skin condition that mainly affects the face which cannot be cured, but can be managed. It is more common in women and people with lighter skin, but symptoms can be worse in men. Treatment can help with symptoms.
Signs of rosacea include:
- •Redness (blushing) across your nose, cheeks, forehead, chin, neck and chest that comes and goes, usually lasting for a few minutes each time — your face may also feel warm, hot or painful
- •A burning or stinging feeling when using water or skincare products
What causes rosacea?
The exact causes of rosacea are not entirely known, but some things can make symptoms worse.
Common triggers for rosacea include:
- •Alcoholic drinks
- •Spicy foods such as curries / chilli
- •Hot drinks such as tea or coffee
- •Sunlight
- •Hot or cold temperatures
- •Aerobic exercise, like running
- •Stress or anxiousness
How can I manage my rosacea / redness?
You can avoid the triggers listed above, however sometimes these efforts alone just don't tackle it. We can offer a range of treatments to help manage the signs of redness and the associated symptoms.
Treatment
Chemical peels to treat rosacea
We offer a medically licensed chemical peel which targets the vascular supply to the face, which in turn improves the redness and other symptoms you may be experiencing.
Generally we ask clients to start using preparatory products (which can be purchased via our clinic) for 4 weeks prior to the peel to build up their skin tolerance and allow the chemical peel to achieve the most optimal results.
Chemical peels can be uncomfortable with some stinging / burning throughout, however a fan is used to manage these symptoms. The chemical peel is a short procedure only lasting between 5–10 minutes.
Chemical peels can come with some mild to moderate downtime for around a week with some mild skin shedding, sensitivity and redness. Most people tolerate chemical peels very well.
Chemical peels for rosacea are best carried out in conjunction with medical grade skincare products which clients can use at home pre and post procedure. This will enable optimal results to be achieved.
Chemical peels are usually carried out every 2–4 weeks depending on skin recovery time, and clients usually require a course of around 6 treatments. Suitable for all skin types.
Treatment
IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) to treat rosacea / redness
Here at SkinLab we use a device called the Excelight to deliver IPL. Our device has been produced by Lynton Lasers — a multi-award winning UK based company who have developed this IPL device based on their clinical research at the University of Stockport.
Our IPL device has an official UK medical license for the conditions it treats, including rosacea and redness. The Excelight device is one of the very few devices which is approved by the NHS.
IPL uses the power of light to generate heat, and a combination of light colours (which are not visible to the eye). These rays of light are then passed through the skin at various impulse rates and frequencies and in turn can manage all the signs and symptoms of rosacea and redness.
Results can vary and people often need to complete a course of around 6–8 treatments, 4 weeks apart, with maintenance top-up IPL sessions if / when symptoms reoccur. There is no defined time when this may be, and does vary from person to person.
All white, Caucasian and Asian skin can be treated. However, clients who are Fitzpatrick scale 4 (darker skin types) are treated with caution and after a thorough assessment. Darker African skin clients Fitzpatrick 5 or 6 cannot have IPL treatments and are contraindicated to this treatment.

Treatment
Dermalux light therapy (phototherapy) for redness and rosacea
Light Emitting Diode (LED) Phototherapy is a non-invasive treatment that targets specific non-thermal light to energise cells which triggers a cascade of bio-stimulatory responses. It is scientifically proven for a wide range of indications, including redness.
Well evidenced for its regenerative and healing benefits, phototherapy does not transfer heat or create trauma — making it particularly effective to treat problematic and inflammatory conditions.
Dermalux Flex is a medically licensed device with one of the highest safety profiles. It is a pain-free treatment with no downtime and is suitable for all skin types. We recommend that this is used daily via our home rental scheme for 14 days.
Treatment
Medical grade skincare for redness and rosacea
Rosacea can also be managed with medical grade skincare which contains vasoconstrictors to reduce the vascular flushing and overwhelming blood supply to the facial area which causes many of the signs and symptoms of rosacea and redness.
These products can be purchased from clinic after a skin consultation with Clare, one of our advanced nurse practitioners. They can be trialled as a stand-alone treatment or used in conjunction with the above treatments for optimal longer-lasting results.
Treatment
Hydrafacial for redness and rosacea
Rosacea and redness can also be managed with regular Deluxe or Platinum Hydrafacials. The Hydrafacial utilises patented technology to cleanse the skin, extract all the dirt, debris and excess oils from the skin, before adding in a personalised skin booster and finally nourishing the skin with a multitude of peptides, hyaluronic acid and enzymes to enrich and rehydrate the skin.
The personalised skin booster includes vasoconstriction ingredients which are used during the Hydrafacial. These active ingredients such as vasoconstrictors help to reduce the vascular flushing and overwhelming blood supply to the facial area which causes many of the signs and symptoms of rosacea and redness.
It would be recommended that medical grade skincare is used alongside regular Hydrafacials to maintain results. These products can be purchased via clinic after a skin consultation with Clare, one of our advanced nurse practitioners.
Hydrafacials should be carried out at least on a monthly basis.
Hydrafacials are suitable for all skin types, however, they cannot be used in aspirin-allergic clients, shellfish allergy or whilst pregnant or breastfeeding.
